Launch of the RoNaQCI project

Published: Apr 20, 2023

Trencadis Corp as a partner in the RoNaQCI project is pleased to announce that a quantum communications infrastructure will be developed in our country.

POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest organized on Tuesday, 28.03.2023, the launch conference of the RoNaQCI (Romanian National Quantum Communication Infrastructure) project that will develop a quantum communication infrastructure in our country.

Through its research institutes PRECIS and CAMPUS, together with RoEduNet - National Network for Education and Research in Romania, UPB is implementing the first communication nodes connected by quantum devices.

POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest is the first node already operational in Romania, becoming a vitally important point in the future national and European quantum communications network.

With the aim of seeking solutions to the most important challenges of digitisation, the RoNaQCI (Romanian National Quantum Communication Infrastructure) project will develop a quantum communication infrastructure in our country. At the national level, UPB is coordinating the consortium that will implement this €10 million project, funded both by the Digital Europe Programme and by the Romanian state.

During 2022, 85% of companies and organisations worldwide will have been targeted by at least one cyber attack. However, only half of the data destroyed could be recovered. Seeking solutions to this problem of today, POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest becomes a promoter of quantum technologies, with the aim of increasing security and efficiency of communications. In particular, UPB is carrying out its own research project in the field of Quantum Communications, and the procedure for purchasing the specific equipment required has already been completed.

Mihnea COSTOIU, Rector POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest

"In the next few years, quantum technologies will make it possible to achieve things that today seem impossible. A whole generation of new technologies is beginning to emerge, with far-reaching economic and social impact. There is a constant concern in higher education and research in Romania about research in this field and active participation in European initiatives on Quantum Communications, which will lead to a new series of technologies in the field of computing and secure communications.

POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest, together with 29 partners, won a grant under the Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL) EU Secure Quantum Communication Infrastructure (DIGITAL-2021-QCI-01) - Deploying advanced national QCI systems and networks, with the RoNaQCI project, with a budget of 10 million euros.

RoNaQCI aims to develop the first quantum communications infrastructure in Romania. The consortium is made up of 30 partners, research institutions, universities, government institutions and companies. Support for the infrastructure is provided by RoEduNet and will provide the physical environment for quantum communications as well as integration with the classical network. The project also aims to develop advanced case studies in collaboration with project partners to demonstrate the utility of such a network. Last but not least, we will create training hubs in all important areas of Romania."

To support the expansion of this innovative network, specialists in quantum technology will be trained at POLITEHNICA University in Bucharest. Research in this field plays a key role. Thus, students will have access to advanced theoretical support in this future sector, through the first Master's programme in Romania, set up by the Department of Computing, specialising in quantum computing.
